Why I Built This

Growing up, Ludo was the go-to game on rainy afternoons and long power cuts β€” just a board, four colors of tokens, and a single die that decided everything. I built Ludo King Free because I wanted that same simple fun to be one click away, without installing an app or creating an account. It runs entirely in your browser: open the page, pick your number of players, and you're rolling dice within seconds. If a friend isn't around, you can fill the empty seats with computer opponents and still get a full game going.

How to Play

Each player controls four tokens of one color: Red, Green, Yellow, or Blue.

  1. All four tokens start in your home base (the colored corner of the board).
  2. Players take turns rolling a single six-sided die.
  3. To move a token out of your home base and onto the board, you must roll a 6.
  4. Once on the board, move your token clockwise around the track by the number shown on the die.
  5. If you roll a 6, you get an extra turn.
  6. Landing on an opponent's token sends it back to their home base β€” unless it's on a safe square (marked with a star).
  7. Once a token completes a full loop around the board, it enters the home column, leading straight to the center.
  8. The first player to get all four tokens into the center home wins!

History of Ludo

Ludo originated from the ancient Indian game Pachisi, which dates back over 1,500 years and was even played by Mughal emperors on giant cloth boards with real people as tokens. The modern, simplified version using a die instead of cowrie shells was patented in England in 1896 under the name "Ludo," from the Latin word meaning "I play." Since then, it has spread worldwide and remains a household favorite, now enjoyed digitally by millions through mobile apps and online platforms like this one.

Yes β€” each token must roll a 6 to leave the home base before it can move around the board.

What happens if I land on an opponent's token?

Their token gets sent back to their home base, unless it's sitting on a safe (star) square.

Is Ludo based on luck or skill?

Both β€” the dice rolls are random, but deciding which token to move and when to take risks involves real strategy.
